To use the Reddit Wayback Machine method, paste the thread or subreddit address (for example reddit.com/r/subreddit/comments/ID/title/) into the Wayback Machine at web.archive.org and open a capture from before the post or comment was deleted or edited. It works only if the Internet Archive’s crawler saved that page while the content was still visible. The single most useful trick is to search the old.reddit.com version of the same address, because those captures are usually plain HTML that shows the text, while captures of the modern Reddit layout are often incomplete. This guide covers the exact steps, how to list every archived thread in a subreddit, why some captures show no comments, and what to try when the archive has nothing.
How the Reddit Wayback Machine search works
There is no special Reddit archive at the Internet Archive. The “Reddit Wayback Machine” is the normal Wayback Machine used on Reddit addresses. It stores copies of public pages as the crawler received them on a certain day. If a thread was captured before a post was removed, the capture still shows the post. If the thread was never captured, or was captured only after the deletion, the archive cannot show the missing text.
Reddit content has appeared under several addresses over the years, and the archive stores each address separately:
www.reddit.com/r/NAME/comments/ID/slug/(the main thread page)old.reddit.com/r/NAME/comments/ID/slug/(the older, lighter layout)np.reddit.com,i.reddit.comand other subdomains that were used for no-participation links and simple mobile pagesredd.it/ID(the short link, which redirects to the thread)
The thread ID, the short code after /comments/, is the part that matters. The slug after it can change or be missing; Reddit still opens the thread from the ID alone, but the archive stores the exact address it visited.
Step by step: find an archived Reddit thread
- Get the thread address or ID. Use a link from your history, a bookmark, an email notification or a page that linked to the thread.
- Search the Wayback Machine. Open web.archive.org, paste the full address and press Enter. The calendar shows each day it was captured.
- Repeat with old.reddit.com. Replace
www.reddit.comwithold.reddit.comand search again. These captures are more often readable. - Use a wildcard if the slug is uncertain. Search
reddit.com/r/NAME/comments/ID*to see every captured address that starts with that thread ID, whatever slug or parameters followed it. - Pick a date before the change. If a comment disappeared on a known day, open captures from before it. Compare two captures to see what changed.
- Record the archive address. Copy the full Wayback URL with its 14-digit timestamp so you can cite or revisit the exact copy.
List every archived thread in a subreddit
If you are researching a whole community rather than one thread, ask the Wayback Machine’s CDX index for every captured thread address under the subreddit:
https://web.archive.org/cdx/search/cdx?url=old.reddit.com/r/NAME/comments/&matchType=prefix&fl=timestamp,original,statuscode&collapse=urlkey&filter=statuscode:200
Replace NAME with the subreddit. collapse=urlkey keeps one line per address and filter=statuscode:200 keeps successful captures only. Run the same query with www.reddit.com. Popular subreddits can return very long lists, so add &limit=500 and page through the results, sending one request at a time. The Internet Archive limits heavy traffic and answers bursts with HTTP 429 errors; our guide to fixing Wayback Machine 429 errors explains how to pace requests.
For the full list of CDX parameters see our Wayback Machine API guide. From a terminal, waybackurls produces a similar list of archived addresses for a domain or path.
Why an archived Reddit thread shows the post but not the comments
The modern Reddit site builds much of the page with JavaScript and loads deeper comments on demand. The crawler saved the first response, which may contain the post and only the top comments, or a page skeleton that does not render in the archive viewer. Collapsed replies and “load more comments” sections were not expanded by the crawler, so those replies are usually missing.
What helps:
- Prefer old.reddit.com captures. The older layout put more comments directly in the HTML.
- Check the raw capture. Insert
id_after the timestamp (/web/20200101000000id_/https://old.reddit.com/...) to view the original response without the archive toolbar, then search the page source for the text you need. - Try the JSON address. Reddit threads also had a data version ending in
.json. Occasionally that address was captured too; search the thread address with.jsonadded. - Look at individual comment links. A comment permalink (
/comments/ID/slug/COMMENTID/) is a separate address and may have its own capture. - Rule out archive problems. If captures will not load at all, see why the Wayback Machine is not working before concluding the content is lost.
Deleted versus removed Reddit content
Reddit shows [deleted] when the author deleted a post or comment, and [removed] when a moderator or Reddit removed it. For the Wayback Machine the difference does not matter: only the timing does. If a capture was taken before either happened, the archived copy shows the original text. If every capture is from after, it does not.
Some third-party tools once displayed removed comments by drawing on bulk Reddit datasets. Access to that data was heavily restricted after Reddit changed its API terms in 2023, so many of those tools now show far less than they used to. The Wayback Machine is independent of that change, but it only has what its crawler happened to save.
Images, videos and links inside Reddit posts
Images hosted on Reddit (i.redd.it) and on outside hosts are separate files. A thread capture may show a broken image if the file itself was not captured. Search the image address in the Wayback Machine to check for a separate capture; our guide on recovering missing images from the Wayback Machine walks through that process. Reddit-hosted video (v.redd.it) is streamed in segments and is rarely playable from the archive; see downloading video from the Wayback Machine for what is and is not possible.
Links inside a post often point to articles or websites that have since disappeared. Those destination pages may have their own captures, often more complete than the Reddit thread.
Saving and citing what you find
- Keep the full archive URL with its timestamp. It is a stable, checkable reference.
- Save a local copy with your browser’s Save page or Print to PDF function, and store the archive URL beside it.
- Quote the text with the capture date, the subreddit and the thread ID, so someone else can find the same copy.
- For research, legal or journalistic use, cite the archive URL rather than relying on a screenshot alone.
Your own Reddit history
If you want your own posts and comments, request your data from Reddit’s privacy settings instead. Account holders can ask Reddit for a copy of their account data, which includes content the public archive never captured. The Wayback Machine is the route for other people’s public posts, or for content from an account you can no longer access.
Reddit Wayback Machine limits to keep in mind
- Coverage is selective. Busy threads and front-page posts were captured far more often than small threads in quiet subreddits. Many threads have no capture at all.
- Private and quarantined communities were not public to the crawler, so their threads are generally absent.
- Exclusions exist. Some material has been removed from the Wayback Machine on request, so an absence is not proof that something never existed.
- Use content responsibly. Archived posts were public once, but their authors may have had reasons to delete them. Quote and share with care.
When a Reddit thread points to a website that is gone
Old threads are full of links to small sites, project pages and shops that no longer exist. If you need one of those websites back, the archive may hold many of its pages. Our free archive check shows how much of a domain was captured, and the Wayback website download service can deliver the captured pages as a clean HTML ZIP. For other platforms, see our guides to the Twitter Wayback Machine, the Instagram Wayback Machine and the Facebook Wayback Machine.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Reddit Wayback Machine show deleted comments?
Yes, if the thread or the comment’s permalink was captured before the comment was deleted, and the capture includes that comment. Comments hidden behind “load more” were usually not captured.
Should I search reddit.com or old.reddit.com?
Both. Captures are stored under the exact address visited. old.reddit.com captures are usually easier to read because the text is in the HTML.
How do I find a thread if I only remember part of the title?
Use a CDX prefix query on the subreddit’s /comments/ path and search the returned list for words from the slug, which usually contains the title.
Why does the archived thread show a blank page?
The capture holds a script-built page that does not render in the archive viewer. Try the old.reddit.com address, a different date, or the raw id_ view and search the page source.
Is there a way to see every archived post from one Reddit user?
User profile pages (reddit.com/user/NAME/) were captured occasionally and list recent posts at that time. Search that address and its old.reddit.com version; coverage is usually sparse.
